Inverse Kinematics
Forward Kinematics (FK) is the default motion control you have of bones wherein they can rotate individually and any child of that particular bone will move along with them.
Inverse Kinematics (IK) is a bone setup in which a helper bone is created that allows for multiple bones (parents and children) to move in a more freeform, connected way. This can be very helpful in speeding up animation. IK bones are often set for the legs (off the back of the heal) and for the arms (off the wrist).

In addition, Pole Targets can be used to control the positioning of the knees and the elbows. These are usually set up farther away from the body.
