Media Literacy Defined
Media = forms of communication (for example: television, books, radio, direct mail, movies, billboards, the Internet, a video game, or a magazine article) that transmit messages, tells stories, structures learning, and/or constructs a “reality” about the world.
Media Literacy = the ability to access, analyze, critically & actively evaluate, and produce communication in a variety of forms
Key Principles of Media Literacy
1. All media messages are constructed.
2. Different people interpret the same media message in different ways.
3. Each medium has different characterisitcs, strengths, and a unique "language".
4. Media have embedded values and points of view.
5. Media messages are produced for particular purposes, including profit, persuasion, education, and artistic expression.
